Arctic Monkeys at Kings Theatre – by Will Oliver
For nearly a decade now my good friend Blake, the man behind Arctic Monkeys US, and I pondered one day doing a joint best songs list for Arctic Monkeys’ expansive catalog. With the release of the band’s new album The Car just 48 hours away, we decided to stop talking about it and put our minds to use and see what happened. There was no one better to ask than a man who has proven his love for the band and kept other fans constantly in the loop, with knowledge and class.
Full disclaimer, this is really a list of our favorite (favourite?) songs. The word “best” signifies some sort of declaration statement and that is not the goal. It was interesting to go with our hearts, and ignore the parts of our brains that said, well shouldn’t you include that song, wait, that album isn’t even represented (I’m sorry)? We ended up changing our lists multiple times, up to the very last minute of the fake deadline that we gave ourselves. At a certain point, the rankings were just out of the nature of necessity.
Let’s just get to the good stuff. Blake and I each made our own individual top 25 lists, then combined them into a final list determined via a point system based on ranking and appearances on both lists taken into consideration. There were some impossibly tough cuts that got left on the brink of 25, but more so many great songs that we were happy to find room for.
With that said, below you can find our joint top 25 Arctic Monkeys songs below, followed by our own individual lists to see where each of us stood. We hope that you enjoy it and that it sparks a good healthy and respectful discussion, but please feel free to chime in to let us know where we got it wrong, and maybe even right.
