How to get an Instruction Permit

Suppose you are 14 or 15 years old and submitting your initial license application. In that case, you must first obtain and maintain an Instruction Permit.

You’ll receive the permit after passing the written test. To pass, you must correctly answer 20 out of the 25 questions in the written test. Then, after 30 days, you can take the road test to obtain the Learner’s license.

How to get a Learner’s license

The Arkansas Learner’s license functions similarly to the Instruction Permit. However, it shows that the driver has completed the driving skills test and has been on the road for at least six months without an accident. The car inspection, vehicle knowledge, and a 10- to 20-minute drive make up the skills test.

After receiving your Learner’s license, you must continue driving under the supervision of a licensed adult over 21 or an instructor. In addition, you can’t use any communication device while driving.

How to get an Intermediate License

Once you are 16, you can apply for an Intermediate License if you have a Learner’s Permit. If not, you must be at least 16 and have held a permit for six months. To get this license, you shouldn’t have a serious traffic violation or accident liability on your record. You will have a set period with an Intermediate License, during which you must drive with a licensed adult who is 21 years old. The back of your driver’s license will indicate when you can begin driving unsupervised.

When applying for an Arkansas driver’s license, if you are over 18, you will also be given an Intermediate License. However, drivers over 18 will only need to hold an Intermediate License for 30 days to qualify for the road test.

Restrictions

  • When you drive unsupervised, only one person under 18 who is not a family member can accompany you.
  • Except for religious activities, school events, work-related activities, or emergencies, you cannot drive unattended between 11 pm and 4 am. If pulled over, you must provide proof of why you’re traveling at these times.
  • Except in an emergency, you can’t use a phone while driving the car.

You can submit your Intermediate License as evidence that you passed the written and skills tests if you have one. Else, you should finish the tests during the application process.

How can out-of-state drivers get a driver’s license in Arkansas?

Unless you have lived in Arkansas for more than six months, you needn’t transfer your valid out-of-state driver’s license to an Arkansas license. Also, tests aren’t required if your license is active or has expired for less than 30 days. However, you will have to retake the written and visual exams if it has been more than a month after the expiration date. Also, you’ll have to take a writing test if your license remains expired for more than a year.
